alternative.me’s Crypto Fear & Greed Index scores market sentiment from 0 (Extreme Fear) to 100 (Extreme Greed). It blends six inputs — price volatility and drawdowns (25%), market momentum and volume (25%), social media activity (15%), public surveys (15%, currently paused), Bitcoin dominance (10%), and Google Trends search interest (10%) — into a single daily score. Despite the name, it reads Bitcoin specifically rather than the crypto market as a whole.
Crypto sentiment swings harder and faster than equity sentiment, and this is the most widely quoted measure of it — which makes it a read on what crypto traders are being told to feel as much as on what they feel. The two edges are not symmetric: since 2018 the index has sat in Extreme Fear on 23% of days and in Extreme Greed on only 9%. Fear is the common state here, euphoria the rare one.
No. They share a name, a 0–100 scale and five band labels, and nothing else. CNN’s reads the US equity market from seven inputs; this one reads Bitcoin from six. The boundaries differ too — this index puts Fear/Neutral at 47 and Neutral/Greed at 55, where CNN uses 45 and 55 — so an alert set at the same number is a different trigger on each chart.
These are common levels traders set email alerts around — click the chart to place a line at any of them.
We map alternative.me’s own bands onto the chart. Drag the amber line to the score you care about and we’ll email you when the daily reading crosses it. Note the bands are not CNN’s — Fear ends at 46 and Greed starts at 55 here — so the same number means a different thing on the two indices.

25 and 76 are the band edges most people watch. Since 2018 the index has spent 23% of days at or below 25 and only 9% at or above 76, so an alert at 25 fires several times a year while one at 76 can stay quiet for months.
No — it is not a buy signal. The index measures how the crowd feels, not what price does next, and it has sat in Extreme Fear through both lasting bottoms and long grinding declines. Treat it as a prompt to look rather than a reason to act: set an alert, then apply your own rules.
