Questions

What is the 200-week moving average?

The average of a stock's last 200 weekly closing prices. It smooths out the noise, so a close near it shows how far the stock has pulled back from, or run ahead of, its longer-term trend.

Why look at stocks below their 200-week moving average?

The 200-week average covers about four years. Strong companies rarely close below it, so when one does, it has usually had a deep, lasting pullback. It is a screen for stocks that deserve a closer look, not a buy signal.

How is the distance calculated?

We turn each stock's daily closes into weekly closes (the last close of each week, with the current week at its latest close) and average the last 200. The percentage is the latest close against that average.

Which stocks are on the list?

A hand-picked set of exceptional companies (the Magnificent Seven plus other category leaders) and the stocks Reddit's stock communities mention most, taken hourly from ApeWisdom's top 200. Reddit stocks carry a Reddit rank tag, and a stock being talked about is not a recommendation. Sign in to see your own watchlist stocks measured the same way.

How do I get an email when a stock falls below its 200-week moving average?

Sign up for the free weekly digest on this page. Every Saturday after Friday's close we email the stocks that fell below their 200-week moving average that week, the ones that climbed back above it, and the ones furthest below and closest to it.
